* How to achieve excellence and efficiency? Jesus has a busy schedule: recruitment of disciples, training, casting out demons, healing the sick, cleansing the lepers, meeting the crowds, teaching and instructing. He is busy but never in a hurry. Mark highlighted He went to a solitary place in the morning and prayed there – the fountain of our strength!

We attend Chinese church and Western church, serving in hymn leading, Bible study, car service, Sunday school… The Chinese and western believers are well integrated, serving in one accord. * When we are faced with hardships in this world, remember how our Lord spent His life. Our Lord refused to drink the wine mingled with myrrh (v. 23), intended as a narcotic drink to relieve His pain. He willingly remained in His suffering to complete His Father’s will. Do we seek help and comfort other than God? In the days of fiery trials, do we take a narcotic drink? Or do we watch and pray?

* Why didn’t Jesus answer Pilate? Is silence an act of cowardice? As the ancient Chinese saying goes, “Great courage is shown by those who are not frightened at a sudden danger, and who are not mad at an unreasonable charge.” He was like a sheep silent before the shearers. He did not defend for Himself, because the one who put Him to trial had no authority to judge the Son of the Eternal God! Jesus did not open His mouth in front of Pilate and his representative authority, who cared nothing about Truth. He knew deep within that it was God who did it. He was ready to lay down His life for His sheep!

* This longest chapter in the Gospel of Mark tells of a touching story of a woman who broke a wedding vase and poured it over Jesus’ head in a time of great darkness – at the time of greatest need of our gracious Lord and God’s family. Today what are we offering?

… I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. (v26)

* The poor widow offered God all she had. The word “poor” here describes the pathetic state of a beggar having none at all. This word appears 40 times in the New Testament. It is a playscript for us all. Loss of a spouse, loss of a loving relationship. Her life should have been one of speechless brokenness, yet the God-fearing widow gave out of her meagre strength. She knew the hope of resurrection. She knew all are living in God’s sight. She knew reunion would be close at hand!

* Abide by law and public orders when Caesar reigns, all the more so if we embrace the vision of resurrection in the next age (v. 13-27). We would rather love God with an honest heart, and love our neighbours as ourselves, than to seek applause and profits by artful defense!

* Seeking the colt (v.1-10) – The colt looks weak and is bound by a rope. Do we often feel that we cannot bear large responsibilities? We must search for vessels on behalf of the Lord, do not look down on people, have the eyes of the Lord, to find colts that can be used by Him!

* There is a survey done: parents usually speak with their children for 14 minutes, of which 12 are negative, 1 is neutral, and 1 is positive. Proverbs says, “Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.” Parents, take note!

* In the Kingdom of God, the “great” ones are those who serve, care, perfect, shepherd others. There is no different in status, only in gifts and functions. To be greedy and to abuse power will be miserable!

* A parent’s voice (2): The whole family has been infected except our helper. We made arrangement for her to stay in a hotel to avoid being infected. My child had a high fever and I was worried and prayed and God told me, “By grace you have been saved through faith.” I was immediately comforted because my child’s name is 阿信 (faith)! God allows us to go through fire but He is with us!

* A parent’s voice: Family members confirmed positive for Covid one by one. The child ran a high fever, the public scrambled to buy drugs and the private doctors refused to take positive cases…I was desperate and got down on my knees to pray, talked to God all night and declared my child belonged to Him and also asked brothers and sisters to intercede for my child…Finally the fever subsided and he recovered. In fact, I also experienced difficulty in breathing and cried out to God in bed, woke up in the night feeling great peace. Thank God, What a friend I have in Jesus! (Note: the family has recovered)

* Hong Kong’s medical staff are facing extreme pressures. The brothers and sisters are on the frontlines saving patients, relying on God in difficult times. There is a newly graduated nurse who worked in the isolation wards for over a month, facing critically ill patients; in her fatigue she continues to pray, with the Lord’s grace giving her strength. Another doctor at the frontlines is always concerned about their patients, putting in their best… please pray for the medical personnel that you know, so that they experience peace out of this world. We would rather search far and wide for famous teacher, to yearn for saints who have gone before us and yet ignore our Savior! The Word is not far from us and God’s angels may just be ahead of us!

* Received from an evangelical organisation in Ukraine: When the war broke out, he was called upon to dig trenches. Quoting from Proverbs 3:5-6, he encouraged everyone not to rely on their own wisdom but on the Lord, to serve Him steadfastly, to entrust their lives and future to God, trusting in HIM. The present situation, he said, would bring Ukraine closer to God!
